  BLACK STARSCREAM (22)
    e-Hobby Exclusive

Black Starscream (22) was released by Takara in December 2001 as an e-Hobby exclusive, retailing at ¥7,500.  I purchased the Ghost & Black Starscream set through BigBadToyStore.com in May 2002.  The contents of this page will basically be the same as the re-issue Starscream, with minor changes/additions.

Starscream's package contents

Black Starscream's box measures approximately 8.75"x7.88"x2" and is arranged in a clear plastic container, partially configured in vehicle mode.  The box is Black vice your standard re-issue.  His color scheme is Black, Grey, and Gold.  The jet measures at 8.25" from nose to tail, 3" tall from landing gear to tip of vertical stabilizer, and 6" for wingtip to wingtip.  Black Starscream includes the following components:

1. Body (Jet mode)
2. Nose gear
3. Wings (x2)
4. Horizontal stabilizer (x2)
5. Vertical stabilizer (x2)
6. Missile Launcher (x2)
7. Short Missiles (x2)
8. Long Missiles (x2)
9. Sticker sheet
10. Instruction Sheet
11. Character Card (no tech spec on back)

As with the re-issue Starscream, this release has two sets of pre-applied stickers.  Since this is an exclusive, I chose not to apply the stickers from their sheet.

The first set is the Gold stripe located on the leading edge (top) of the wings and the second set is on the outer side of the vertical stabilizers (tailfins), which is Gold with White shadow outline Black Starscream's rub-sign is located on the top just behind the canopy.

ACCESSORIES & WEAPONS:  There first photo shows the various attachments; wings, horizontal & vertical stabilizers, fists, and nose gear.  The second photo shows the missile launchers and projectiles.

Black Starscream's Accessories

The missile launchers are spring-activated with the push of a button and the instruction sheet identifies the projectiles as "missile bullets".  The long missile resembles the tip of a laser guided bomb and when the short missile is loaded, it's shape (with the launcher) resembles external fuel tanks.

ROBOT MODE:  To transform Black Starscream into robot mode, remove the nose gear and place it in the canopy for safe keeping.  Remove the missile launchers from the wings and horizontal stabilizers from the vertical stabilizers.  Re-connect the horizontal stabilizers to the opposite side from where they were removed and ensure the leading edge is facing to the rear of Starscream.  Rotate the rear landing gear downward to create Black Starscream's feet.  Now remove the wings and stand him on his feet.

Rotate the nose piece slightly at the joint under the canopy so that you can push out the main piece (arms) located in the middle of Starscream's body.  The parts should separate into two pieces and swing outward forming arms.  Next, rotate the nose piece (connected by Black arm piece) downward and push it through the center of Starscream's die-cast body.  The canopy should now become his torso.  Rotate the nose piece so that Starscream's head is exposed, and push it upward so that it rests above the canopy joint.

Reconnect the wings to the peg holes ensuring the leading edge is facing downward and tucked behind the Blue vertical stabilizers.  You can also display Starscream with his wings outside of the vertical stabilizers which gives him the appearance of flight.  Eject the short missiles and replace them with the long missiles.  and for the last step, attach the fists to the end of the arms and attach the missile launchers to the outer side of the arms.  Starscream stands at approximately 5.5" in height.

Black Starscream's articulation is quite limited as previously mentioned in my original Starscream review.  His arms rotate at the shoulders and that's about it.  Takara has continued to make their exclusives with either Black or a Clear color scheme.  I prefer the Black version myself due to its association with the dark side.  Black Starscream is quite expensive but and may not be worth the money to some collector's since it's a re-paint.  I still recommend it if you like the exclusives or the fact that it's Black.
