 TRANSFORMERS: CAR ROBOT

B R A V E  M A X I M U S

BRAVE MAXIMUS (C-027)

Takara released the biggest Transformer in the Car Robot's line called Brave Maximus on the 11th of October but didn't show up in my area until the next day.  I spent 4 hours looking for this guy and when I thought that my luck had run out after visiting 3 malls, he was displayed proudly in a "Hello Mac" toystore...my last stop.  I nabbed him as well as Devil Gigatron and the photo session began!

The box above is huge (9"x16"x24") and quite heavy with two different versions of box art that can be displayed horizontally or vertically.  When you finally pull him out of the box you'll notice lots of twist ties holding him in place.  I think I spent at least 20 minutes taking him out of the box :)

Did I mention that Brave Maximus is HUGE?!   Once you've released him from his metal & plastic webbing you can attach his various pieces which come in a separate bag with its contents identified below as well as the three different modes; Brave Maximus robot, Superdreadnought-Class Battleship Maximus, and Cybertron City mode.

Brave Maximus is a re-painted Fortress Maximus (gray, white, red, & blue) with a new and improved color scheme.  Red and Blue (dark & light) are the predominant colors with some Gray parts as well.  Another noticeable change is the Control Center's shield on his left shoulder which is now a neon Green.  There are no sticker sheets included since all stickers were neatly pre-applied at the factory.  Someone has already identified some missing stickers on the Force Cannons located on Brave Maximus' shins.  One thing that Mike Turner, a fellow TransFan, reminded me to mention are the die-cast parts (other than screws and joints) which have not been seen on any Transformer in a long time.  These parts can be found at his mid-section and left-leg that connects to the Command Center.

I'm extremely excited about this monstrous figure since I don't own  a Fortress Maximus, but wish I at least had his weapons.   As many already know, Brave Maximus is missing many attachments from the original figure.  It's kind of disappointing that Takara would omit them from Brave Maximus since everyone says they were nice additions to Fortress Maximus.

Here's a partial scan of the Cybertron City campaign grand prize advertisement which shows Brave Maximus in Fortress Maximus colors.   The actual Brave Maximus prize was released in its' current colors but included all accessories that were omitted from C-027.

This list identifies the attachments that weren't included in this release:

1.  Attack/Recon Vehicle called "Gasket"
2.  Armored Vehicle called "Grommet"
3.  Photon Rifle
4.  Laser Arms (x2)
5.  Dual Laser Blaster
6.  Laser for "Cog"

I must say that whomever won one of the 300 Cybertron City prizes during the campaign held during 16 March - 30 June 2000 was very lucky since all accessories are included.  Here's a list of accessories that were included with Brave Maximus:

1.  Mini-Laser Rifle for "Brave" figure (former Cerebros)
2.  "Plasma" mini-figure (former Spike)
3.  "Brave" figure
4.  Radar Scope
5.  Ramps (x2)
6.  Instruction sheet/playmat/tech-spec card

My best guess as to why Takara decided not to include all the attachments is to make this prize different from the mass released Brave Maximus.

My newest addition to Brave Maximus is the hilt (14 Nov 01).  Justin Thompson provided me with a "tip" to Jangar's page on e-Bay which happened to be a clone of Grand Maximus' sword in Black & Red colors.  I was really interested in the hilt, so I decided to make a purchase :)  I think Jangar did an excellent job in creating this clone hilt that I had to show some pics and give him some credit.

My newest addition to Brave Maximus is the Dual Laser Blaster (8 Jan 01).  You know, the one of many accessories Takara made "exclusive" and omitted from the C-27 release?  I just received this from Ken Szemethy of KCC Collectibles.  It is a mold from the original Dual Laser Blaster that is one of Fortress Maximus' weapons.  Ken does excellent work in providing accessories for Transformers and is working on the Photon Rifle.  As soon as they are made available you can bet that I'll be making another purchase!  Now if someone would only provide him with the hilt of Grand Maximus he could reproduce it and I'd have a nice connector for the Super God Sword!!  One can only wish ...

May 2003

I'm finally working on getting all of the missing parts for Brave Maximus and I've hooked up with Jangar once again to fill the void!  The latest part I received was Brave's Sword (a.k.a. Cog) as shown in the photos above.  The sword fits perfectly into Brave's fist for anyone who's wondering.  This is an excellent reproduction and definitely worth adding to your collection--highly recommended!!  Thanks to Jangar for providing me with a quality piece of work to display on my Brave Maximus page!!

Brave is the robot that transforms into Brave Maximus' head and Plasma transforms into Brave's head.   Both Brave and Plasma have a Red, Black, and Silver color scheme.  These two were formerly called Cerebros (Brave) and Spike (Plasma) with the original Fortress Maximus.

When Brave is in Robot Mode he measures 5 1/2" tall.  He isn't much to look at nor is he well articulated.  I think the best part of him is his head.  At least he has a weapon and an Autobot sticker on his chest :)

Brave with his chest plate opened up to reveal 3 colored bands.  These bands rotate to reveal its colors when Plasma is inserted into Brave's body.  So what's the deal with this slot-machine display?  Well, thanks to Sean Hill, here's the answer to my question:

When the 5 Autobot & 6 Decepticon Headmasters came out in 1987, Hasbro decided to attach a new gimmick to the concept of the Robot's head transforming into a human.  The first 3 categories on the robot's Tech Specs were represented in the form of a "Tech Spec Meter" in its respective chest (i.e., Strength, Intelligence & Speed).

The 3 bars which plug in to the meter would scroll upwards with a respective reading.  The higher the reading, the longer the bar needed.  In the case of Fort Max, all his scores were "10", so therefore the 3 bars were of equal length, and quite long.  There was an abbreviated description above each of the columns. i.e.; STR, INT, SPD.

Plasma is approximately 2" in height which just about the standard size of a Headmaster.  He looks Red in my photos here but has more of a wine or Burgundy color.  There isn't much to transforming him into Brave's head...just fold up his legs up to his chest and that's it.   His head becomes part of the connector for Brave when in "head" mode as shown on the right.  There's a little flap on his back which covers Brave's face so that Plasma doesn't have this noticeable head on his back when in Robot Mode.  And when he is transformed into Brave's head, fold the flap up to reveal his face once again.

The final photo on this page is Cybertron City placed on the "artificial" playmat that Takara poorly produced on the opposite side of the instruction sheet.  I don't own an original playmat but have seen photos which clearly show a much larger playmat.  This playmat measures 16"x23.5" and I would guess that it is half the size of the original.  The photo I have shows the mat extending slightly beyond the rear of the city and much more on the sides and front of the city.  If there is anyone who was lucky enough to win one of the 700 playmats during the Cybertron City campaign, please drop me an e-mail with its dimensions and type of materials used.

I'm really happy I added Brave Maximus to my collection even though he is missing some missing parts.  I highly recommend this figure if you're willing to shell out the money and have plenty of room to display him :)  His appearance is definitely an improvement from Fortress Maximus...but then again, Fort Max has all his weapons!
