MINIBOTS
TF Collection #12 |
|

The Minibot Team (Powerglide,
Bumble, Gears, Drag, Warpath & Adams) was released in
Japan in February, 2004 and sold for ¥3,000. It is the
thirteenth re-issue set
(#12) released in this new stylized packaging.
The box is made of corrugated cardboard with a front flap that is
secured by two strips of velcro. Since 2004 is
the 20th Anniversary of Transformers, Takara added a new logo to the box
cover which is located on the upper left-hand side. This logo
states "Transformers 20th Anniversary - Since 1984". I purchased
this figure in February 2004 from
www.jrstoyworld.com.
The box
is mostly White with Yellow trim and measures
8.75"H x 6.75"W
x 2.375"D. The
"Transformers" lettering is embossed on the front
along with the anime Minibots created by Dreamwave Productions.
The writing on the ends of the
box (front & sides) allow it to be displayed on a
shelf in different ways, horizontally &
vertically. The top & bottom is mostly printed in English
and each side panel can be displayed vertically or horizontally.
The horizontal panel is mostly in English whereas the
vertical is mostly in Japanese characters.

Opening the flap reveals several things--a
nice layout with parts secured in a
molded plastic container and data cards attached to the backside of the
front flap. The cellophane cover is framed nicely with an
Autobot symbol on the front/top and "Minibot" printed on the
front/bottom.
The backdrop is Green
with the Minibots name
below each figure as well as the Collection
12 writing. At the very bottom of the backdrop is "Transformers".
The card catalog is almost entirely in Japanese with
most of the page titles in English. The index page is glued to the
front cover of the box and outlines the contents of the card catalog.
This catalog can be removed from the box due to the perforated edge
and can be stored in a 6-ring binder provided
with the Convoy Collection #0 release.

There are three figures which were
originally released in 1983 as part of the New Microman - Micro Change
Series called MiniCAR Robo. The figures I'm talking about are
Bumble (03 VW Bug), Gears (04 4WD Truck) and Drag (07 Semi Truck).
For more information and photos of the original figures, please visit
Paul Lorphanpaibul's
MiniCAR Robo section. The three other figures (Powerglide,
Warpath & Adams) were originally released in 1984.

Powerglide is an A-10
aircraft with a Red & Grey color scheme and measures approximately
1 3/4"L x 3 5/8"W x 1"H in vehicle mode. He is definitely the
largest of the six Minibot figures in this release. Powerglide has
a couple of pre-applied stickers placed on top of the fuselage.
The Autobot rub-sign is also placed on top and between the two engines.
He also has two Grey tanks under each wing and three static wheels.
VEHICLE TO ROBOT
MODE: To transform Powerglide into Robot Mode, simply
extend the rear section of the aircraft to create his legs and feet.
Next, rotate the wings downward 90° then fold them up 90° so that they
rest against the fuselage. Extend the Grey parts then rotate them
downward to create his arms. Finally, rotate his head 180° so that
the Autobot symbol is under his chin. Powerglide now stands at
approximately 2 1/4" tall in robot mode.
His face is Grey with
some Black paint applied to his eyes. He has a big head, but I
like the fact that it's created out of two separate pieces; face &
helmet. Powerglide's arms have several joints; shoulder joints
allow him to rotate his arms upward & extend outward, and elbow joints
to bend upward. |

Bumble (a.k.a. Bumblebee
in the U.S.) is a Volkswagen Bug which has a Yellow & Black color scheme
and measures approximately
1 7/8" L x 1 1/2"W x 1 1/4"H in vehicle mode. Bumble is probably
to most recognized and admired Minibot because of his character in the
movie. The only pre-applied sticker is the Autobot symbol which is
placed on the roof. His rub-sign is also placed on the license
plate located at the rear.
Bumble is basically a
Choro-Q vehicle minus the pull-back mechanism. He has chromed hubs
and rubber tires which provide an excellent roll on a table top.
He has shoulder joints which allow you to rotate his arms upward and
that's about it. Bumble is my favorite of the six Minibots because
of his roll-factor :)
VEHICLE TO ROBOT
MODE: To transform Bumble to Robot Mode, simply pull out
the wheel parts to create his arms. Next, extend the front half of
the vehicle and rotate it upward 90°. This step forms the legs &
feet. Finally, fold the chromed license plate upward to reveal his
head. Bumble now measures approximately 3" tall in robot mode.
One major change that
Takara made to this re-issue is Bumble's head which is more accurate to
the anime show. |

Gears is a 4WD Truck with
a Blue, Red & Black color scheme measuring approximately 2"L x 1 1/2"W x
1 1/4" in vehicle mode. There are two pre-applied stickers which
is the Autobot symbol and rub-sign located on the hood and roof
respectively. If you look at the underside of the vehicle, you'll
notice the two other pre-applied stickers; Autobot symbol & torso
grille. Gears has four off-road plastic tires which provide a
rough and noisy roll on a table top.
If you look closely at
the hood you'll notice the letter "M" which was probably used to
identify it as a Microman or Micro Change toy since it was originally
released within that line in 1983.
VEHICLE TO ROBOT
MODE: To transform Gears to Robot Mode, rotate the rear
half of the truck 180° upward to create his legs and feet. Stand
him on his newly formed feet then pull out his arms. Gears now
stands at approximately
2 3/8" tall in robot mode.
His color scheme is more
Red than Blue in this mode and you can also see the chrome applied to
his legs parts and Silver paint on his face. Gears articulation is
limited to rotation at his shoulders as with many other Minibots. |

Drag (a.k.a. Huffer in
the U.S.) is a Semi Truck with an Orange & Black color scheme and
measures approximately 2"L x 1 1/2"W x 1 3/8"H in vehicle mode. There is
one pre-applied rub-sign located on Drag's roof, but if you turn the
vehicle over you'll notice the Autobot symbol, chest & pelvic stickers.
Drag has four off-road wheels which provide a rough and noisy roll on a
table top.
If you
look closely at the doors you'll notice the letter "M" which was
probably used to identify it as a Microman or Micro Change toy since it
was originally released within that line in 1983.
VEHICLE TO ROBOT
MODE: To transform Drag to Robot Mode, simply extend the
rear section of the truck which separate in two to create his legs and
feet. Next, pull out the front wheels and rotate them so that the
chrome pipes look somewhat like arms. Lastly, unhitch the cab from
the truck by rotating it forward slightly, then connect it to the
tongue-n-groove joint so that his head part rests on his shoulders.
Drag now stands at approximately 2 3/4" tall in robot mode.
Drag has
a Blue head with some Silver paint applied to his visor/eyes. His
head is hidden under the truck's cab as shown on the left. |

Warpath is a Tank with a
Maroon and Grey color scheme and measures approximately 2 3/4"L x 1
1/4"W x 1 3/8"H in vehicle mode. There are three pre-applied
stickers with two clearly visible in vehicle mode; Autobot symbol on
turret base & rub-sign on front of tank. The last sticker is
located under the Grey part below the turret base and is placed at
Warpath's pelvic region in robot mode.
Warpath
has three tiny Black wheels underneath the tank (two at the front and
one at the rear) which provide somewhat of a smooth roll on a table top.
It's a really nice looking tank with a rotating turret base. Too
bad the turret can't actually move up or down.
VEHICLE TO ROBOT
MODE: To transform Warpath to Robot Mode, pull back on the
Grey part at the rear to separate this half of the tank. Now take
hold of the rear section and rotate it upward 90°. Extend both
sides of this rear section and rotate the newly formed arms downward.
Push back the turret and base so that it rests centered on the Grey
part. Lastly, flip up the door on top of the turret base to reveal
Warpath's head. He now stands at 2 7/8" tall in robot mode. |

|
|
Warpath's head has an octagonal shape with Black paint applied on his
eyes. He can rotate his arms up & down. Since his head is
attached to the turret base, you can rotate it which is something that
all of the other Minibots lack (minus Powerglide). I really like
Warpath's robot mode and is my second best figure of the bunch.

Adams is a UFO with a
Hunter Green, Yellow & Red color scheme and measures approximately 2"L x
1"H in vehicle mode. Adams has two pre-applied stickers which is
clearly visible in vehicle mode; Autobot symbol & rub-sign. There
are four wheels underneath (one at the front, two in the middle and one
at the rear) which really don't provide a smooth roll since they are
divided into three sections. There are two sets of three exhaust
pipes at the rear of the vehicle which slightly breaks up the saucer
shape.
VEHICLE TO ROBOT
MODE: To transform Adams to Robot Mode, grab the front
section of the UFO, pull it out, then rotate it downward 90° to create
his legs. Now fold up the base (part with the rub-sign) and lock
it into place to create his feet. Rotate the side parts upward
then slide them up the side slots to secure his arms. The last
step is to pull up on the Red part on top of the UFO to extend his head.
Adams now stands at approximately 2 1/2" tall in robot mode.
Adams
head is Yellow with Red paint applied to his helmet. This is quite
plain and Adams is by far my least favorite of the six Minibots.

Overall, I really like
the Minibot Team. Each figure is unique in its own way with one or
two which are less favored. I don't know why the other three
original figures released in 1984 (1983 if we're talking about MiniCAR
Robo)--Cliff (Cliffjumper), Charger (Windcharger) & Gong (Brawn)--were
replaced with Warpath, Powerglide & Adams. Unless, Takara/Hasbro
decided to split the figures so that the U.S. & Japanese Transformers
are equally represented. Who knows...I still welcome any Minibots
to my collection! |
