SOUNDWAVE (17) &
CONDOR (20)

TF Collection #10

Soundwave (17) & Condor (20) was released in Japan in September, 2003 and sold for ¥4,980.  It is the eleventh re-issue figure (#10) released in this new stylized packaging.  The box is made of corrugated cardboard with a front flap that is secured by two strips of velcro.

One thing included with this release is an advertisement (5.75" x 8.25") for the upcoming Playstation2 Transformers, scheduled to be released on 30 October 2003 with a ¥6,800 price tag.  The characters shown on the advertisement are Convoy, Megatron, Meister, Starscream, Wheeljack and Soundwave.

The box is mostly White with Fuchsia trim and measures 8.75"H x 6.75"W x 2.375"D.  The "Transformers" lettering is embossed on the front along with the anime Soundwave & Condor created by Dreamwave Productions.  The writing on the ends of the box (front & sides) allow it to be displayed on a shelf in different ways, horizontally & vertically.  The top & bottom is mostly printed in English and each side panel can be displayed vertically or horizontally.  The horizontal panel is mostly in English whereas the vertical is mostly in Japanese characters.

Opening the flap reveals several things--a nice layout with parts secured in a molded plastic container and data cards attached to the backside of the front flap.  The cellophane cover is framed nicely with a Decepticon symbol on the front/top and "Soundwave" printed on the front/bottom.

The backdrop is Blue with Soundwave's name above the Collection 10 and Condor's name below it.  At the very bottom of the backdrop is "Transformers".  Each accessory/weapon has a label below the part.

The card catalog is almost entirely in Japanese with most of the page titles in English.  The index page is glued to the front cover of the box and outlines the contents of the card catalog.  This catalog can be removed from the box due to the perforated edge and can be stored in a 6-ring binder provided with the Convoy Collection #0 release.

Condor in Barrier Case

Condor was originally released in 1983 within the Microman/Microchange sub-line and called MC-03.  It wasn't until this figure was brought to the U.S. in 1984 before it was named Laserbeak.  Condor is packaged in Bird Mode with two chrome Machine Gun attachments and Barrier Case as shown in these photos.

Condor's Machine Guns

Condor transformers into a mini-cassette which can be stored in the Barrier Case or in Soundwave's chest.  His color scheme is Black with several pre-applied stickers in various colors.  He is comprised of plastic and die-cast metal which is painted Red.  Condor measures approximately 1.25" x 2" in Cassette Mode.

In Cassette Mode, his Destron rub-sign is located on the center/bottom of Side-A.  The Destron sticker is located on Side-B as shown below.

In Bird Mode, his Destron sticker is located on top of his head.  His wings can be swept back or brought forward as shown in the photos below.  His head is attached by hinge joints at the base of his head and neck.  The wings are also attached by two hinge joints located at the wing/elbow joint and at the body.

BIRD TO CASSETTE MODE:  To transform Condor from Bird to Cassette Mode, the first thing you need to do is to remove the Machine Gun attachments from their peg holes located on Condor's back.  The next step is to stretch out his head then slide it back into his body so that it is flush at the top/front.  Now take his wings and fold them inward so that they are flush with the body.  The last step is to fold both legs outward which should snap into place.

Condor is a neat little figure which can be stored in Soundwave's chest when it's in Cassette Mode.

S O U N D W A V E

Soundwave was originally released in Japan within the Microman/Microchange sub-line as MC-10 in 1983.  In 1984 it was brought into the U.S. Transformers line and called Soundwave.  There are several versions of Soundwave with different attachments which can be found at Remy's Soundwave page.

Soundwave is a Stereo Micro Cassette Recorder which is packaged in this mode.  He measures approximately 4.25"L x 1.75"W x 3"H.  Majority of his color scheme is made up of dark Blue and Grey with plastic and die-cast metal.  There are also some chrome, Silver and Gold paint applied throughout this figure.  Soundwave has a sticker sheet, but none have been applied to him in any of my photos.  The pre-applied stickers are located at the following locations:

Cassette Mode:
- REC STOP sticker below chrome buttons
- REC/BATT sticker wraps around "R" side
- STEREO MICRO CASSETTE RECORDER
  sticker wraps around "L" side
- Destron logo sticker applied to top of door

Robot Mode:
- Stickers applied to left/right shoulders
- Stickers applied to left/right kneecaps

Soundwave's mold has been re-tooled since its' original release.  What's really noticeable is the cassette door hinge which allows it to extend twice as far as the original.  The hinge now extends outward and is visible on the left/right side of the chrome buttons.  These buttons have also been placed on the outside instead of through the plastic case that was cut out so the buttons fit through.

Soundwave's head has some Silver paint applied to his forehead and mouth guard, with Yellow paint applied to his eyes.

CASSETTE TO ROBOT:  To transform Soundwave into Robot Mode, pull down the "R" & "L" sides of the recorder from the top 90° downward, then another 90° downward because it has two sets of joints.  This step create his legs.  Rotate his legs to the front 90°, then extend his die-case toes downward, locking them into place.

Rotate the shoulder/arm parts from the back to the front.  Push the Blue levers located on the outer side of the arms downward to extend his fists.  Now lift his head upward 90° and rotate it to the front.  The final step is to attach the Concussion Blaster to the peg hole located on his right shoulder, then the Rocket Launcher (extending the front part) & Rocket to his fist.  Soundwave now stands at 6.75"H x 4.25"W.

The photos below show Soundwave's cassette door extended/ejected for Condor.  Just press the chrome eject button on his left shoulder to open the door.

Soundwave's back is shown below without the battery cover attached.  His Concussion Blaster and Rocket Launcher were made to look like actual AA batteries that can be placed into his back for storage.

Here are a couple of photos of Soundwave with Condor placed into his torso (Side-A & Side-B).

Soundwave has more articulation than several other G1 figures in that his shoulders and hips can rotate outward.  His head can rotate and arms can rotate upward 90° at the elbows, but doesn't have any articulation at the knees.

I still think Soundwave is a great figure and looks much better than my other original figures which have taken a beating over the years.
